Around the summer of 2017, while John was working as the safety manager for a roustabout company contracted by a major oil operator, personnel were required to wear atmospheric monitors in their breathing zone. This typically meant clipping monitors onto shirt collars. In the heat of summer, this practice caused collars to stretch, leaving areas of skin unprotected from potential flash fire hazards and damaging costly flame-resistant shirts. After searching for a lanyard that could comfortably support the weight of a monitor while also incorporating a break-away safety feature, John was surprised to find that none existed. Recognizing the need, he purchased a second-hand sewing machine and began developing the first AXS Monitor Mate. The initial design proved an immediate success, and Monitor Mates were issued to roustabout crews. In recent years, as most “A List” oil companies have made requirements for monitors to be worn in the breathing zone, demand for the Monitor Mate atmospheric monitor lanyard has surged. AXS Consulting Specialties (AXSCS) has continued production and is now on its third design update.
